For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit,and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

And Jesus asked him,“ What is your name?” He replied,“ My name is Legion, for we are many.”

For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses.How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?For we know him who said,“ Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again,“ The Lord will judge his people.”It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively.Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion.These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted;wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.

They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing,but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error.They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.What the true proverb says has happened to them:“ The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,saying,“ Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every sideand tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life— to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that.All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankindby hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved— so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last!

You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”They said to him,“ He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”Jesus said to them,“ Have you never read in the Scriptures:“‘ The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

But when the Pharisees heard it, they said,“ It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.”

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.Whoever hates me hates my Father also.If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

Therefore also the Wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.

Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!See, your house is left to you desolate.For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say,‘ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

as it is written,“ God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”And David says,“ Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.”
