Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.

“ But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus answered them,“ I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.Did John’s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say to us,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin,’ we’re afraid of the crowd, because everyone considers John to be a prophet.”

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.”

Then they asked him,“ Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”“ Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied.“ Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written about him.”

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.And if you’re willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come.
