約翰差來的人走了以後，耶穌對群眾講起約翰來，說：“你們到曠野去，是要看甚麼？被風吹動的蘆葦嗎？你們出去到底要看甚麼？身穿華麗衣服的人嗎？這些衣服華麗，生活奢侈的人，是在王宮裡的。那麼，你們出去要看甚麼？先知嗎？我告訴你們，是的。他比先知重要得多了。聖經所記：‘看哪，我差遣我的使者在你面前，他必在你前頭預備你的道路’，這句話是指著他說的。我告訴你們，婦人所生的，沒有一個比約翰更大，然而在神的國裡最小的比他還大。”眾人和稅吏受過約翰的洗禮，聽見這話，就稱神為義。但法利賽人和律法師，未受過約翰的洗禮，就拒絕神對他們的美意。

所以你們應當留心怎樣聽，因為凡是有的，還要給他；凡是沒有的，連他自以為有的，也要拿去。”

耶路撒冷、猶太全地和約旦河一帶的人都出來到他那裡去，

約翰的洗禮是從哪裡來的呢？是從天上來的，還是從人來的呢？”他們就彼此議論：“如果我們說‘是從天上來的’，他會問我們‘那你們為甚麼不信他呢？’

他就來到約旦河一帶地方，宣講悔改的洗禮，使罪得赦。正如以賽亞先知的書上寫著：“在曠野有呼喊者的聲音：‘預備主的道，修直他的路！一切窪谷都當填滿，大小山岡都要削平！彎彎曲曲的改為正直，高高低低的修成平坦！所有的人都要看見神的救恩。’”約翰對那出來要受他洗禮的群眾說：“毒蛇所生的啊，誰指示你們逃避那將要來的忿怒呢？

耶穌轉過身來，看見他們跟著，就問：“你們要甚麼？”他們說：“拉比，你在哪裡住？”（“拉比”的意思就是“老師”。）

我這樣決定，難道是反覆不定嗎？我所決定的，難道是體貼肉體而定，使我忽是忽非嗎？神是信實的，我們向你們所傳的道並不是“是”而又“非”的，

那時，施洗的約翰出來，在猶太的曠野傳道，說：“天國近了，你們應當悔改。”以賽亞先知所說：“在曠野有呼喊者的聲音：‘預備主的道，修直他的路！’”就是指著這約翰說的。

但是你放縱情慾，好像水沸騰一樣，你必不能居首位；因為你上了你父親的床；上了我的榻，然後把它玷污了。
