在旷野有呼喊者的声音：‘预备主的道，修直他的路！’”照这话，施洗的约翰在旷野出现了，传讲悔改的洗礼，使罪得赦。犹太全地和全耶路撒冷的人，都出来到他那里去，承认自己的罪，在约旦河里受了他的洗。

约翰差来的人走了以后，耶稣对群众讲起约翰来，说：“你们到旷野去，是要看什么？被风吹动的芦苇吗？你们出去到底要看什么？身穿华丽衣服的人吗？这些衣服华丽，生活奢侈的人，是在王宫里的。那么，你们出去要看什么？先知吗？我告诉你们，是的。他比先知重要得多了。圣经所记：‘看哪，我差遣我的使者在你面前，他必在你前头预备你的道路’，这句话是指着他说的。我告诉你们，妇人所生的，没有一个比约翰更大，然而在神的国里最小的比他还大。”众人和税吏受过约翰的洗礼，听见这话，就称神为义。但法利赛人和律法师，未受过约翰的洗礼，就拒绝神对他们的美意。

所以你们应当留心怎样听，因为凡是有的，还要给他；凡是没有的，连他自以为有的，也要拿去。”

耶路撒冷、犹太全地和约旦河一带的人都出来到他那里去，

约翰的洗礼是从哪里来的呢？是从天上来的，还是从人来的呢？”他们就彼此议论：“如果我们说‘是从天上来的’，他会问我们‘那你们为什么不信他呢？’

他就来到约旦河一带地方，宣讲悔改的洗礼，使罪得赦。正如以赛亚先知的书上写着：“在旷野有呼喊者的声音：‘预备主的道，修直他的路！一切洼谷都当填满，大小山冈都要削平！弯弯曲曲的改为正直，高高低低的修成平坦！所有的人都要看见神的救恩。’”约翰对那出来要受他洗礼的群众说：“毒蛇所生的啊，谁指示你们逃避那将要来的忿怒呢？

耶稣转过身来，看见他们跟着，就问：“你们要什么？”他们说：“拉比，你在哪里住？”（“拉比”的意思就是“老师”。）

我这样决定，难道是反覆不定吗？我所决定的，难道是体贴肉体而定，使我忽是忽非吗？神是信实的，我们向你们所传的道并不是“是”而又“非”的，

那时，施洗的约翰出来，在犹太的旷野传道，说：“天国近了，你们应当悔改。”以赛亚先知所说：“在旷野有呼喊者的声音：‘预备主的道，修直他的路！’”就是指着这约翰说的。

但是你放纵情欲，好像水沸腾一样，你必不能居首位；因为你上了你父亲的床；上了我的榻，然后把它玷污了。
