Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples,“ Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”

One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching him closely.

Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with such scum?”

But the people were displeased.“ He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

When they heard this, all the people— even the tax collectors— agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John.

Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach.This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people— even eating with them!

The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say,‘ He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it.”One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.

But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful.God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important.As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

O Lord, what great works you do! And how deep are your thoughts.Only a simpleton would not know, and only a fool would not understand this:

and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.

We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.

Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders.And they sang in a mighty chorus:“ Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered— to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.”And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang:“ Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.”And the four living beings said,“ Amen!” And the twenty four elders fell down and worshiped the Lamb.

A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him.Then Mary took a twelve ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said,“ That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.”Not that he cared for the poor— he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.Jesus replied,“ Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

They sang,“ Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength belong to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.

Though I am the least deserving of all God’s people, he graciously gave me the privilege of telling the Gentiles about the endless treasures available to them in Christ.I was chosen to explain to everyone this mysterious plan that God, the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning.God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
