We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t mourn!

‘我们向你们吹笛，你们不跳舞；我们向你们举哀，你们不捶胸。’

‘我们为你们吹笛，你们不跳舞；我们唱哀歌，你们不捶胸。’

‘我们为你们吹笛，你们不跳舞；我们唱哀歌，你们不捶胸。’

“‘我们吹娶亲的乐曲，你们不跳舞；我们唱送葬的哀歌，你们不悲伤。’

说：‘我们给你们吹笛子，你们却不跳舞；我们唱哀歌，你们也不捶胸。’

说：‘我们为你们吹笛，你们却不跳舞；我们唱哀歌，你们也不捶胸。’

我們向你們吹笛，你們不跳舞；我們向你們舉哀，你們不捶胸。

曰、我吹籥、爾不踊、我舉哀、爾不擗、

我吹籥、爾不踊、我悲歌、爾不傷、

我向爾吹笛、而爾不躍、我向爾悲歌、而爾不哭、

「我吹笛、爾未舞；我悲歌、爾未哭。」

“‘ We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

“‘ We played the flute for you. But you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song. But you didn’t become sad.’

“‘ We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

‘ We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t mourn.’

We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t mourn!

and say,‘ We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not mourn.’

and saying:‘ We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not lament.’

and say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not mourn.

And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

‘ We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, yet you did not weep.’

and say,‘ We played the flute for you, and you didn’t dance. We mourned for you, and you didn’t lament.’

Who is he trying to teach? Who is he trying to instruct? Infants just weaned from milk? Babies removed from the breast?For he says:“ Law after law, law after law, line after line, line after line, a little here, a little there.”So He will speak to this people with stammering speech and in a foreign language.He had said to them:“ This is the place of rest, let the weary rest; this is the place of repose.” But they would not listen.Then the word of the Lord came to them:“ Law after law, law after law, line after line, line after line, a little here, a little there,” so they go stumbling backward, to be broken, trapped, and captured.

When Jesus came to the leader’s house, He saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly.

This is what the Lord of Hosts says: Consider, and summon the women who mourn; send for the skillful women.Let them come quickly to raise a lament over us so that our eyes may overflow with tears, our eyelids soaked with weeping.For a sound of lamentation is heard from Zion: How devastated we are. We are greatly ashamed, for we have abandoned the land; our dwellings have been torn down.Now hear the word of the Lord, you women. Pay attention to the word of His mouth. Teach your daughters a lament and one another a dirge,

Jesus said to them,“ Can the wedding guests be sad while the groom is with them? The time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Although I am a free man and not anyone’s slave, I have made myself a slave to everyone, in order to win more people.To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win Jews; to those under the law, like one under the law— though I myself am not under the law— to win those under the law.To those who are without that law, like one without the law— not being without God’s law but within Christ’s law— to win those without the law.To the weak I became weak, in order to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I may by every possible means save some.Now I do all this because of the gospel, so I may become a partner in its benefits.

All the people followed him, playing flutes and rejoicing with such a great joy that the earth split open from the sound.

Again I will build you so that you will be rebuilt, Virgin Israel. You will take up your tambourines again and go out in joyful dancing.

Your singing will be like that on the night of a holy festival, and your heart will rejoice like one who walks to the music of a flute, going up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.
