You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.

And he said to me,‘ Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said,“ Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.”And as they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air,

And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

Jesus said to them again,“ Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,“ Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying,“ You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”But Peter began and explained it to them in order:“ I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me.Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air.And I heard a voice saying to me,‘ Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’But I said,‘ By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’But the voice answered a second time from heaven,‘ What God has made clean, do not call common.’This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven.And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea.And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house.And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say,‘ Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter;he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning.And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?”When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying,“ Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,“ Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.”

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

And the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the people of Israel. And they took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities.And at the beginning of their dwelling there, they did not fear the Lord. Therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them.So the king of Assyria was told,“ The nations that you have carried away and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the law of the god of the land. Therefore he has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them, because they do not know the law of the god of the land.”Then the king of Assyria commanded,“ Send there one of the priests whom you carried away from there, and let him go and dwell there and teach them the law of the god of the land.”So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and lived in Bethel and taught them how they should fear the Lord.But every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the shrines of the high places that the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities in which they lived.The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.They also feared the Lord and appointed from among themselves all sorts of people as priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places.So they feared the Lord but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.To this day they do according to the former manner. They do not fear the Lord, and they do not follow the statutes or the rules or the law or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel.The Lord made a covenant with them and commanded them,“ You shall not fear other gods or bow yourselves to them or serve them or sacrifice to them,but you shall fear the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm. You shall bow yourselves to him, and to him you shall sacrifice.And the statutes and the rules and the law and the commandment that he wrote for you, you shall always be careful to do. You shall not fear other gods,and you shall not forget the covenant that I have made with you. You shall not fear other gods,but you shall fear the Lord your God, and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.”However, they would not listen, but they did according to their former manner.So these nations feared the Lord and also served their carved images. Their children did likewise, and their children’s children— as their fathers did, so they do to this day.

The Jews said to one another,“ Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.

The Jews answered him,“ Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”

“ The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”

And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him.But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said,“ Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go.

Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony,“ He told me all that I ever did.”So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.

and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.

and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come.

by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved— so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last!

Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ.And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did.For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.So there was much joy in that city.But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great.They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying,“ This man is the power of God that is called Great.”And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic.But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed.Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John,who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money,saying,“ Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”But Peter said to him,“ May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God.Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you.For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.”And Simon answered,“ Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.
