When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.

“ I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling.

His disciples said,“ Look, now you’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language.

“ Didn’t we strictly order you not to teach in this name? Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”

Wisdom calls out in the street; she makes her voice heard in the public squares.She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:“ How long, inexperienced ones, will you love ignorance? How long will you mockers enjoy mocking and you fools hate knowledge?If you respond to my warning, then I will pour out my spirit on you and teach you my words.

So he said,“ The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

On that day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea.Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, while the whole crowd stood on the shore.Then he told them many things in parables, saying,“ Consider the sower who went out to sow.As he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it grew up quickly since the soil wasn’t deep.But when the sun came up, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it.Still other seed fell on good ground and produced fruit: some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what was sown.Let anyone who has ears listen.”Then the disciples came up and asked him,“ Why are you speaking to them in parables?”He answered,“ Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know, but it has not been given to them.For whoever has, more will be given to him, and he will have more than enough; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.That is why I speak to them in parables, because looking they do not see, and hearing they do not listen or understand.Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You will listen and listen, but never understand; you will look and look, but never perceive.For this people’s heart has grown callous; their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn back— and I would heal them.“ Blessed are your eyes because they do see, and your ears because they do hear.For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you see but didn’t see them, to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.

Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness.

Doesn’t wisdom call out? Doesn’t understanding make her voice heard?At the heights overlooking the road, at the crossroads, she takes her stand.Beside the gates leading into the city, at the main entrance, she cries out:“ People, I call out to you; my cry is to the children of Adam.Learn to be shrewd, you who are inexperienced; develop common sense, you who are foolish.

Jesus told the crowds all these things in parables, and he did not tell them anything without a parable,so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: I will open my mouth in parables; I will declare things kept secret from the foundation of the world.

“ I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.

So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with those who worshiped God, as well as in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.
