Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues.

“ You must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over to councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.

“ For this reason I am sending you prophets and wise men and experts in the law, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,

But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says‘ Fool’ will be sent to fiery hell.

But when they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry about how you should make your defense or what you should say,

I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to force them to blaspheme. Because I was so furiously enraged at them, I went to persecute them even in foreign cities.

“ Then they will hand you over to be persecuted and will kill you. You will be hated by all the nations because of my name.Then many will be led into sin, and they will betray one another and hate one another.

I replied,‘ Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat those in the various synagogues who believed in you.

They will put you out of the synagogue, yet a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he is offering service to God.

You be on guard against him too, because he vehemently opposed our words.

Then, if the guilty person is sentenced to a beating, the judge shall force him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of blows his wicked behavior deserves.The judge may sentence him to forty blows, but no more. If he is struck with more than these, you might view your fellow Israelite with contempt.

Do not rely on a friend; do not trust a companion! Don’t even share secrets with the one who lies in your arms!

and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged severely and crucified. Yet on the third day, he will be raised.”

But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.This will be a time for you to serve as witnesses.

Then the commander of the temple guard went with the officers and brought the apostles without the use of force( for they were afraid of being stoned by the people).When they had brought them, they stood them before the council, and the high priest questioned them,saying,“ We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name. Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood on us!”But Peter and the apostles replied,“ We must obey God rather than people.The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, whom you seized and killed by hanging him on a tree.God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.And we are witnesses of these events, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”Now when they heard this, they became furious and wanted to execute them.But a Pharisee whose name was Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the council and ordered the men to be put outside for a short time.Then he said to the council,“ Men of Israel, pay close attention to what you are about to do to these men.For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and nothing came of it.After him Judas the Galilean arose in the days of the census, and incited people to follow him in revolt. He too was killed, and all who followed him were scattered.So in this case I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, because if this plan or this undertaking originates with people, it will come to nothing,but if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them, or you may even be found fighting against God.” He convinced them,and they summoned the apostles and had them beaten. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.So they left the council rejoicing because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.And every day both in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus was the Christ.

When both the Gentiles and the Jews( together with their rulers) made an attempt to mistreat them and stone them,Paul and Barnabas learned about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and the surrounding region.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death.

Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

So the chief priests and the Pharisees called the council together and said,“ What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs.

Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest’s family.After making Peter and John stand in their midst, they began to inquire,“ By what power or by what name did you do this?”Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied,“ Rulers of the people and elders,if we are being examined today for a good deed done to a sick man– by what means this man was healed–let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy.This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, that has become the cornerstone.And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved.”When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and discovered that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus.And because they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against this.But when they had ordered them to go outside the council, they began to confer with one another,saying,“ What should we do with these men? For it is plain to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable miraculous sign has come about through them, and we cannot deny it.But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”And they called them in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.But Peter and John replied,“ Whether it is right before God to obey you rather than God, you decide,for it is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”After threatening them further, they released them, for they could not find how to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.For the man, on whom this miraculous sign of healing had been performed, was over forty years old.

Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes less one.Three times I was beaten with a rod. Once I received a stoning. Three times I suffered shipwreck. A night and a day I spent adrift in the open sea.I have been on journeys many times, in dangers from rivers, in dangers from robbers, in dangers from my own countrymen, in dangers from Gentiles, in dangers in the city, in dangers in the wilderness, in dangers at sea, in dangers from false brothers,

Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of those who mutilate the flesh!

And others experienced mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.

Paul looked directly at the council and said,“ Brothers, I have lived my life with a clear conscience before God to this day.”At that the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.Then Paul said to him,“ God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit there judging me according to the law, and in violation of the law you order me to be struck?”Those standing near him said,“ Do you dare insult God’s high priest?”Paul replied,“ I did not realize, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written,‘ You must not speak evil about a ruler of your people.’”Then when Paul noticed that part of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, he shouted out in the council,“ Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead!”When he said this, an argument began between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.( For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, or angel, or spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.)There was a great commotion, and some experts in the law from the party of the Pharisees stood up and protested strongly,“ We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”When the argument became so great the commanding officer feared that they would tear Paul to pieces, he ordered the detachment to go down, take him away from them by force, and bring him into the barracks.The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said,“ Have courage, for just as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”When morning came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink anything until they had killed Paul.There were more than forty of them who formed this conspiracy.They went to the chief priests and the elders and said,“ We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to partake of anything until we have killed Paul.So now you and the council request the commanding officer to bring him down to you, as if you were going to determine his case by conducting a more thorough inquiry. We are ready to kill him before he comes near this place.”But when the son of Paul’s sister heard about the ambush, he came and entered the barracks and told Paul.Paul called one of the centurions and said,“ Take this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to report to him.”So the centurion took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said,“ The prisoner Paul called me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.”The commanding officer took him by the hand, withdrew privately, and asked,“ What is it that you want to report to me?”He replied,“ The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as if they were going to inquire more thoroughly about him.So do not let them persuade you to do this, because more than forty of them are lying in ambush for him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink anything until they have killed him, and now they are ready, waiting for you to agree to their request.”Then the commanding officer sent the young man away, directing him,“ Tell no one that you have reported these things to me.”

Then the brothers sent Paul away to the coast at once, but Silas and Timothy remained in Berea.
