Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says,‘ You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say,

And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme, and in raging fury against them I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

“ Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake.And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another.

And I said,‘ Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you.

They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message.

then if the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall cause him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with a number of stripes in proportion to his offense.Forty stripes may be given him, but not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight.

Put no trust in a neighbor; have no confidence in a friend; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms;

and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”

But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake.This will be your opportunity to bear witness.

Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them,saying,“ We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”But Peter and the apostles answered,“ We must obey God rather than men.The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while.And he said to them,“ Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men.For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered.So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail;but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice,and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.

When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them,they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country,

Now the chief priests and the whole Council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death,

And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council and said,“ What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.

with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired,“ By what power or by what name did you do this?”Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,“ Rulers of the people and elders,if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed,let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead— by him this man is standing before you well.This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another,saying,“ What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.But Peter and John answered them,“ Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge,for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened.For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one.Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea;on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers;

Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh.

Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.

And looking intently at the council, Paul said,“ Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.”And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.Then Paul said to him,“ God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?”Those who stood by said,“ Would you revile God’s high priest?”And Paul said,“ I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written,‘ You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council,“ Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.”And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party stood up and contended sharply,“ We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?”And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks.The following night the Lord stood by him and said,“ Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.There were more than forty who made this conspiracy.They went to the chief priests and elders and said,“ We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul.Now therefore you, along with the council, give notice to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near.”Now the son of Paul’s sister heard of their ambush, so he went and entered the barracks and told Paul.Paul called one of the centurions and said,“ Take this young man to the tribune, for he has something to tell him.”So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said,“ Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you.”The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately,“ What is it that you have to tell me?”And he said,“ The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him.But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of their men are lying in ambush for him, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him. And now they are ready, waiting for your consent.”So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him,“ Tell no one that you have informed me of these things.”

Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there.
