Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,even though God had said to him,“ It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”

After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel( he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright,and though Judah was the strongest of his brothers and a ruler came from him, the rights of the firstborn belonged to Joseph)—

The sons of Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael.

Joshua said to all the people,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says:‘ Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.

And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.

“ But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend,

Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.

These are the names of the sons of Israel( Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob.The sons of Reuben: Hanok, Pallu, Hezron and Karmi.The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez and Zerah( but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub and Shimron.The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon and Jahleel.These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, besides his daughter Dinah. These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.The sons of Gad: Zephon, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malkiel.These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah— sixteen in all.The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob— fourteen in all.The son of Dan: Hushim.The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel— seven in all.All those who went to Egypt with Jacob— those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives— numbered sixty-six persons.With the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy in all.

Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man, and I blessed him and made him many.

“ Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons will bow down to you.You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness— who dares to rouse him?The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.His eyes will be darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk.

These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.The sons of Judah: Er, Onan and Shelah. These three were born to him by a Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua. Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.Judah’s daughter- in- law Tamar bore Perez and Zerah to Judah. He had five sons in all.The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol and Darda— five in all.The son of Karmi: Achar, who brought trouble on Israel by violating the ban on taking devoted things.The son of Ethan: Azariah.

Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said,“ It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.”She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said,“ Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said,“ Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said,“ This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben 12,000, from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

and she became pregnant and bore him a son.Then Rachel said,“ God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son.” Because of this she named him Dan.Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.Then Rachel said,“ I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.” So she named him Naphtali.When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.Then Leah said,“ What good fortune!” So she named him Gad.Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.Then Leah said,“ How happy I am! The women will call me happy.” So she named him Asher.During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah,“ Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”But she said to her,“ Wasn’t it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”“ Very well,” Rachel said,“ he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him.“ You must sleep with me,” she said.“ I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night.God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.Then Leah said,“ God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.Then Leah said,“ God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.

Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her,“ Don’t despair, for you have another son.”As she breathed her last— for she was dying— she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin.So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath( that is, Bethlehem).

Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin;Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all; Joseph was already in Egypt.

For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.

Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary,“ It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.For this was how the promise was stated:“ At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad— in order that God’s purpose in election might stand:not by works but by him who calls— she was told,“ The older will serve the younger.”Just as it is written:“ Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

“ I have loved you,” says the Lord.“ But you ask,‘ How have you loved us?’“ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord.“ Yet I have loved Jacob,but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.”
