So Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years old. He was the son( as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,

to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.

The woman said to him,“ I know that Messiah is coming”( the one called Christ);“ whenever he comes, he will tell us everything.”

Pilate said to them,“ Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Christ?” They all said,“ Crucify him!”

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David.He went to be registered with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him, and who was expecting a child.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.Because Joseph, her husband to be, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce her privately.When he had contemplated this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,“ Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.She will give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled:“ Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him Emmanuel,” which means“ God with us.”When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord told him. He took his wife,but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he named Jesus.

After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,“ Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.”

Listen: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”Mary said to the angel,“ How will this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?”The angel replied,“ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God.

All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said,“ Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” And so they took offense at him.

But the angel said to them,“ Do not be afraid! Listen carefully, for I proclaim to you good news that brings great joy to all the people:Today your Savior is born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord.

When his parents saw him, they were overwhelmed. His mother said to him,“ Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.”
