So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,“ The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”and“ A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law.Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,as it is written,“ Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,as it is written,“ God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”And David says,“ Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.”

Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses.How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

“ Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, declares the Lord God.

But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,“ You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.And do not presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table.The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.And the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.“ But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”One of the lawyers answered him,“ Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.”And he said,“ Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.

“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.

Can your courage endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.

And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
