全體民眾聽到律法書上的話都哭了。尼希米省長、律法教師以斯拉祭司和教導民眾的利未人對他們說：「今天是你們上帝耶和華的聖日，不要悲哀、哭泣。」尼希米又說：「你們去吃肥美的肉，喝甘甜的酒，並分些給一無所有的人，因為今天是我們主的聖日。不要悲傷，因為從耶和華而來的喜樂就是你們的力量。」利未人使全體民眾安靜，說：「請安靜，因為今天是聖日。不要悲傷。」於是，全體民眾去吃喝，並分給他人，非常歡喜，因為他們明白了教導給他們的話。

他們禁食，我也不會聽他們的呼求；他們獻上燔祭和素祭，我也不會悅納。我要用戰爭、饑荒和瘟疫滅絕他們。」

她瑪把灰塵撒在頭上，撕破身上的彩衣，雙手抱著頭，一面走一面哭。她的哥哥押沙龍問她：「是不是你哥哥暗嫩污辱了你？妹妹，不要聲張，他是你哥哥，不要把這件事放在心上。」於是她瑪就憂憂鬱鬱地住在押沙龍家裡。

耶和華說：「你們獻上許多祭物，對我有什麼用呢？我厭煩公綿羊的燔祭和肥畜的脂肪，我不喜歡公牛、羊羔和公山羊的血。「你們來敬拜我的時候，誰要求你們帶著這些來踐踏我的院宇呢？不要再帶毫無意義的祭物了。我憎惡你們燒的香，厭惡你們的朔日、安息日和大會。你們又作惡又舉行莊嚴的聚會，令我無法容忍。我憎惡你們的朔日及其他節期，它們成了我的重擔，令我厭倦。你們舉手禱告，我必掩面不理。即使你們禱告再多，我也不會聽，因為你們雙手沾滿鮮血。

耶和華憎恨惡人的祭物，悅納正直人的祈禱。

從示巴運來乳香，從遠方帶來菖蒲獻給我，有什麼用呢？我不悅納他們的燔祭，不喜歡他們的牲畜。」

你們要謹慎，不可因為免除債務的第七年將近，就心懷惡念，對貧窮同胞冷眼相待，拒施援手。否則，他會求告耶和華，那時你們便有罪了。

惡人的祭物已經可憎，何況他懷著惡意來獻！
