When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the Lord.Abel also brought a gift— the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift,but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.

I myself will turn against them and cut them off from the community, because they have defiled my sanctuary and brought shame on my holy name by offering their children to Molech.

“ Don’t point your finger at someone else and try to pass the blame! My complaint, you priests, is with you.So you will stumble in broad daylight, and your false prophets will fall with you in the night. And I will destroy Israel, your mother.

But those who choose their own ways— delighting in their detestable sins— will not have their offerings accepted. When such people sacrifice a bull, it is no more acceptable than a human sacrifice. When they sacrifice a lamb, it’s as though they had sacrificed a dog! When they bring an offering of grain, they might as well offer the blood of a pig. When they burn frankincense, it’s as if they had blessed an idol.

“ For I, the Lord, love justice. I hate robbery and wrongdoing. I will faithfully reward my people for their suffering and make an everlasting covenant with them.

I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings.

Therefore, in a single day the Lord will destroy both the head and the tail, the noble palm branch and the lowly reed.The leaders of Israel are the head, and the lying prophets are the tail.For the leaders of the people have misled them. They have led them down the path of destruction.

“ But those who brazenly violate the Lord’s will, whether native born Israelites or foreigners, have blasphemed the Lord, and they must be cut off from the community.Since they have treated the Lord’s word with contempt and deliberately disobeyed his command, they must be completely cut off and suffer the punishment for their guilt.”

How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob; how lovely are your homes, O Israel!

But Samuel replied,“ What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”

But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived.

So I have vowed that the sins of Eli and his sons will never be forgiven by sacrifices or offerings.”
