In a far-off land the LORD will manifest himself to them. He will say to them,‘ I have loved you with an everlasting love. That is why I have continued to be faithful to you.

“ You, my servant Israel, Jacob whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham my friend,you whom I am bringing back from the earth’s extremities, and have summoned from the remote regions– I told you,“ You are my servant.” I have chosen you and not rejected you.

However, only to your ancestors did he show his loving favor, and he chose you, their descendants, from all peoples– as is apparent today.

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Not only that, but when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our ancestor Isaac–even before they were born or had done anything good or bad( so that God’s purpose in election would stand, not by works but by his calling)–

“ You have criticized me sharply,” says the LORD,“ but you ask,‘ How have we criticized you?’You have said,‘ It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD who rules over all?

Moreover, because he loved your ancestors, he chose their descendants who followed them and personally brought you out of Egypt with his great power

In regard to the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but in regard to election they are dearly loved for the sake of the fathers.For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.

When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided up humankind, he set the boundaries of the peoples, according to the number of the heavenly assembly.For the LORD’s allotment is his people, Jacob is his special possession.The LORD found him in a desolate land, in an empty wasteland where animals howl. He continually guarded him and taught him; he continually protected him like the pupil of his eye.Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, so the LORD spread out his wings and took him, he lifted him up on his pinions.The LORD alone was guiding him, no foreign god was with him.He enabled him to travel over the high terrain of the land, and he ate of the produce of the fields. He provided honey for him from the cliffs, and olive oil from the hardest of rocks,butter from the herd and milk from the flock, along with the fat of lambs, rams and goats of Bashan, along with the best of the kernels of wheat; and from the juice of grapes you drank wine.

You have wearied the LORD with your words. But you say,“ How have we wearied him?” Because you say,“ Everyone who does evil is good in the Lord’s opinion, and he delights in them,” or“ Where is the God of justice?”

Since you are precious and special in my sight, and I love you, I will hand over people in place of you, nations in place of your life.

and the LORD stood at its top. He said,“ I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the ground you are lying on.Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, east, north, and south. All the families of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using your name and that of your descendants.

So Jacob went over and kissed him. When Isaac caught the scent of his clothing, he blessed him, saying,“ Yes, my son smells like the scent of an open field which the LORD has blessed.May God give you the dew of the sky and the richness of the earth, and plenty of grain and new wine.May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. You will be lord over your brothers, and the sons of your mother will bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed.”Isaac had just finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, when his brother Esau returned from the hunt.

From the days of your ancestors you have ignored my commandments and have not kept them! Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD who rules over all.“ But you say,‘ How should we return?’Can a person rob God? You indeed are robbing me, but you say,‘ How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and contributions!

May the sovereign God bless you! May he make you fruitful and give you a multitude of descendants! Then you will become a large nation.May he give you and your descendants the blessing he gave to Abraham so that you may possess the land God gave to Abraham, the land where you have been living as a temporary resident.”

You people of this generation, listen to what the LORD says.“ Have I been like a wilderness to you, Israel? Have I been like a dark and dangerous land to you? Why then do you say,‘ We are free to wander. We will not come to you any more?’

He said to me,‘ I am going to make you fruitful and will multiply you. I will make you into a group of nations, and I will give this land to your descendants as an everlasting possession.’

This is what the Lord says:“ What fault could your ancestors have possibly found in me that they strayed so far from me? They paid allegiance to worthless idols, and so became worthless to me.

“ A son naturally honors his father and a slave respects his master. If I am your father, where is my honor? If I am your master, where is my respect? The LORD who rules over all asks you this, you priests who make light of my name! But you reply,‘ How have we made light of your name?’You are offering improper sacrifices on my altar, yet you ask,‘ How have we offended you?’ By treating the table of the LORD as if it is of no importance!

Isaac began to shake violently and asked,“ Then who else hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it just before you arrived, and I blessed him. He will indeed be blessed!”

and the LORD said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”

“ No longer will your name be Jacob,” the man told him,“ but Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.”Then Jacob asked,“ Please tell me your name.”“ Why do you ask my name?” the man replied. Then he blessed Jacob there.So Jacob named the place Peniel, explaining,“ Certainly I have seen God face to face and have survived.”

But the expert, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”
