耶稣的名声传开了，希律王也听见。有人说：“施洗的约翰从死人中复活了，因此才有这些异能在他里面运行。”但别人说：“他是以利亚。”又有人说：“是先知，正如先知中的一位。”希律听见却说：“是我所斩的约翰，他复活了。”原来，希律为他兄弟腓力的妻子希罗底的缘故，派人去抓了约翰，把他绑了在监狱里，因为希律已经娶了那妇人。约翰曾对希律说：“你占有你兄弟的妻子是不合法的。”于是希罗底怀恨他，想要杀他，只是不能。因为希律怕约翰，知道他是义人，是圣人，所以就保护他，虽然听了他的讲论十分困惑，仍然乐意听他。有一天，恰巧是希律的生日，希律摆设宴席，请了大臣、千夫长和加利利的领袖。他的女儿希罗底进来跳舞，使希律和同席的人都很高兴。王就对女孩说：“无论你要什么，向我求，我都会给你”；又对她多次起誓说：“无论你向我求什么，就是我国家的一半，我也会给你。”她就出去对她母亲说：“我该求什么呢？”她母亲说：“施洗约翰的头。”她就急忙进去见王，求他说：“我愿王立刻把施洗约翰的头放在盘子里给我。”王就很忧愁，然而因他所发的誓，又因同席的人，不愿食言，就立刻派一个卫兵，吩咐拿约翰的头来。卫兵就去，在监狱里斩了约翰，把头放在盘子里，拿来给那女孩，她就给她母亲。

那时，希律分封王听见耶稣的名声，就对臣仆说：“这是施洗的约翰从死人中复活，因此才有这些异能在他里面运行。”原来，希律为他兄弟腓力的妻子希罗底的缘故，把约翰抓住绑了，关进监狱，因为约翰曾对他说：“你占有这妇人是不合法的。”希律就想要杀他，可是怕民众，因为他们认为约翰是先知。到了希律的生日，希罗底的女儿在众人面前跳舞，使希律欢喜，于是希律发誓许诺随她所求的给她。女儿被母亲指使，就说：“请把施洗约翰的头放在盘子里，拿来给我。”王就忧愁，然而因他所发的誓，又因同席的人，就下令给她；于是打发人去，在监狱里斩了约翰，把头放在盘子里，拿来给那女孩，她拿去给她母亲。约翰的门徒来，把尸体领去埋葬了，又去告诉耶稣。

他们当中最好的，不过像蒺藜；最正直的，不过如荆棘篱笆。你守候的日子，惩罚已经来到，他们必扰乱不安。

四面的惊吓使他害怕，在他脚跟后面追赶他。他的力量必因饥饿衰败，祸患要在他的旁边等候，

“日月星辰要显出预兆，地上的邦国也有困苦，因海中波浪的响声而惶惶不安。

他们回答：“是施洗的约翰；有人说是以利亚；还有人说是古时的一个先知又活了。”

他们转眼之间成了何等荒凉！他们被惊恐灭尽了。

因为这是万军之主耶和华使异象谷混乱、践踏、烦扰的日子；城墙被攻破，哀声达到山上。
