因耶穌名聲之顯揚、希律王聽見了。有人說：『是施洗的約翰從死人中活了起來，故此才有這些異能運行在他身上。』但另有人卻說他是以利亞；又另有人說是神言人，可以說是神言人中的一位。希律聽見了卻說：『是我所斬首的約翰，他活了起來。』原來希律、為了他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故（因為他娶了她）、曾差遣人抓住約翰，將他捆着，下在監裏。因為約翰屢次對希律說：『你取了你兄弟的妻子是不合法的。』希羅底逼着他，想要殺他，只是不能。因為希律敬畏約翰，知道他是正義聖潔的人，直保護他。他聽了他，就大大為難，但也喜歡聽他。有個好機會的日子到了：當他生日的時候，希律給他的大官、千夫長、加利利的首領、擺設筵席。希羅底自己的女兒進去跳舞；她得了希律和一同坐席的人的歡心；於是王對閨女說：『凡你所願意的，求我，我就給你。』他並且對她起誓說：『凡你所求的，甚至於我國的一半，我也要給你。』閨女就出來，對她母親說：『我要求甚麼？』她母親說：『施洗約翰的頭。』她隨即趕快進去，到王面前求說：『願王即刻把施洗者約翰的頭放在盤子裏給我。』王很是憂困；只因有了起誓的話和坐席的人，就不好意思辭絕她。王立刻差遣一個衛兵，吩咐將約翰的頭拿來。衛兵就去，在監裏把約翰斬首，將他的頭放在盤子裏拿來，給那閨女；閨女就給了她母親。

當那時候、分封王希律聽見耶穌的名聲，就對臣僕說：『這是施洗者約翰；他從死人中活了起來，故此才有這些異能運行在他身上。』原來希律、為了他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故、曾把約翰抓住，給捆綁了，下在監裏；因為約翰屢次對他說：『你娶了這婦人是不合法的。』希律雖然想要殺他，卻懼怕民眾，因為他們都以約翰為神言人。到了希律的生日，希羅底的女兒在眾人中間跳舞，得了希律的歡心。因此希律用起誓的話公然應許，凡她所求的、都要給她。她被母親指使了，就說：『請把施洗者約翰的頭，就在此地放在盤子裏給我。』王很憂愁，只因有了起誓的話和一同坐席的人，就發命令要給；於是打發人、在監裏把約翰斬首了。把他的頭放在盤子裏，拿了來，給那閨女；閨女就拿去給她母親。約翰的門徒上前來，把屍體領去，埋葬了；又去報告耶穌。

他們最好的也只像荊棘，最正直的也只像籬笆刺；他們的守望者所說的日子、他們被察罰之日、已經來到；其慌慌亂亂就在眼前了。

四面的恐怖使他驚惶，隨着他的腳跟追逼着他。他強壯之力因饑餓而衰竭，災難準備要使他顛沛。

『在日月星辰上必有迹象，在地上列國人必有困苦；因了海和翻浪之響聲，人都在為難失措中；

他們回答說：『施洗者約翰；另有人說是以利亞；又另有人說是古時候一個神言人復起了。』

一眨眼間他們怎樣地成了荒涼啊！他們全都被可怕的災難滅盡了。

因為主萬軍之永恆主使異象平谷中有狼狽驚惶、彼此踐踏、慌慌亂亂的日子：都市被拆毁，呼救聲達到山間。
