当时耶稣的名声传扬出去，希律王也听到了。有人说：“施洗的约翰从死人中复活了，所以他身上有行神迹的能力。”又有人说：“他是以利亚。”还有人说：“他是先知，像古时先知中的一位。”希律听见就说：“是约翰，我砍了他的头，他又活了！”原来希律曾亲自派人去捉拿约翰，把他捆锁在监里。他这样作，是为了他弟弟的妻子希罗底的缘故，因为他娶了希罗底为妻，而约翰曾对希律说：“你占有你兄弟的妻子是不合理的。”于是希罗底怀恨在心，想要杀他，只是不能。因为希律惧怕约翰，知道他是公义圣洁的人，就保护他。希律听了约翰的话，就非常困扰，却仍然喜欢听他。有一天，机会来了。在希律生日的那一天，他为大臣、千夫长和加利利的要人摆设了筵席。希罗底的女儿进来跳舞，使希律和在座的宾客都很开心。王就对女孩子说：“你无论想要什么，只管向我求，我一定给你！”并且对她再三起誓：“你无论向我求什么，就是我国的一半，我也一定给你！”于是她出去问母亲：“我该求什么呢？”希罗底告诉她：“施洗的约翰的头！”她急忙到王面前，向王要求说：“愿王立刻把施洗的约翰的头放在盘子上给我！”希律王非常忧愁，但是因为他的誓言和在座的宾客，就不愿拒绝她。希律王立刻差遣一个侍卫，吩咐把约翰的头拿来。侍卫就去了，在监里斩了约翰的头，把头放在盘子上，拿来交给那女孩子，女孩子又交给她的母亲。

那时，分封王希律听见耶稣的名声，就对臣仆说：“这人是施洗的约翰，他从死人中复活，所以他身上有行神迹的能力。”原来希律为了他弟弟腓力的妻子希罗底的缘故，拘捕了约翰，把他捆绑，关在监里，因为约翰多次告诉他：“你占有她是不合理的。”他想杀约翰，但又害怕群众，因为他们都认为约翰是个先知。到了希律生日的那天，希罗底的女儿在众人面前跳舞，希律非常高兴，就起誓答应她，无论求什么都给她。她在母亲的怂恿之下，说：“请把施洗的约翰的头放在盘子上给我。”王就忧愁，但因为誓言和在座的宾客，就下令给她。他派人去，在监里斩了约翰的头，把头放在盘子上，拿来给那女孩子，她又带给母亲。约翰的门徒前来，领了尸体，把它埋葬，然后去告诉耶稣。

他们中最好的，也不过像荆棘，最正直的，也不过是有刺的篱笆。你的守望者所预言的日子，和你被鉴察的时候，已经来到；现在他们必要慌乱不安。

惊骇四面恐吓他，并且追赶他的脚踪。他的气力因饥饿衰败，祸患预备使他跌倒。

“日月星辰将有异兆；在地上，各国也要因着海洋波涛的咆哮而困苦不安。

他们回答：“有人说是施洗的约翰，有人说是以利亚，还有人说是古时的一位先知复活了。”

他们忽然间成了多么荒凉，被突然的惊恐完全消灭。
