耶稣声名远播，希律王也听说了祂的事。有人说：“施洗者约翰从死里复活了，所以能够行这些神迹。”也有人说：“祂是先知以利亚。”还有人说：“祂是个先知，跟古代的一位先知相似。”希律听到这些议论，就说：“祂一定是被我斩了头的约翰从死里复活了。”原来希律娶了他兄弟腓力的妻子希罗底，并为她的缘故而派人逮捕了约翰，把他关押在监牢里。因为约翰屡次对希律说：“你娶弟弟的妻子不合法。”希罗底对约翰怀恨在心，想要杀掉他，只是不能得逞。因为希律知道约翰是个公义圣洁的人，所以敬畏他，并对他加以保护。尽管约翰所讲的道理令他困惑不安，他仍然喜欢听。机会终于来了。希律在自己的生日那天设宴招待文武百官和加利利的显要。希罗底的女儿进来跳舞，甚得希律和客人的欢心。王对她说：“你想要什么，只管说。”王还对她起誓说：“无论你要什么，哪怕是我的半壁江山，我都会给你。”她便出去问她母亲：“我应该要什么呢？”她母亲说：“要施洗者约翰的头！”她马上回去对王说：“愿王立刻把施洗者约翰的头放在盘子里送给我。”王听了这个请求，感到十分为难，但因为在众宾客面前起了誓，就不好拒绝。他立刻命令卫兵进监牢砍了约翰的头，放在盘子里送给这女子，她又转送给她母亲。

分封王希律听见耶稣的名声，就对臣仆说：“这个人是施洗者约翰！他从死里复活了，所以能够行这些神迹。”原来希律为他兄弟腓力的妻子希罗底的缘故，拘捕了约翰，把他捆绑起来关在监里。因为约翰曾多次对他说：“你娶这个妇人是不对的。”他想杀掉约翰，但怕触怒百姓，因为他们都认为约翰是先知。在希律的生日那天，希罗底的女儿出来在众人面前跳舞。希律非常高兴，就起誓答应她无论要什么都可以。她受了母亲的指使，说：“请把施洗者约翰的头放在盘子里送给我。”希律感到为难，但既然在众宾客面前起了誓，只好下令给她。他派人到监里砍了约翰的头，放在盘子里送给她，她转送给她母亲。约翰的门徒把尸体领回安葬后，就去告诉耶稣。

他们当中最好的不过是蒺藜，最正直的也不过是荆棘篱笆。你们的守望者所说的日子，就是你们受惩罚的日子已经来到。你们必惊慌失措。

恐惧四面笼罩着他，步步紧追着他。他饿得气力衰竭，灾祸随时临到他。

“日月星辰必显出异兆，怒海汹涌、波涛翻腾，令各国惊恐不安。

他们答道：“有人说你是施洗者约翰，也有人说你是以利亚，或是一位复活的古代先知。”

他们顷刻间被毁灭，在恐怖中彻底灭亡。
