As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

The time grew near for Jesus to be taken up to heaven. So he made up his mind to go to Jerusalem.

The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me, and I have listened. I have not rebelled or turned away.I offered my back to those who beat me and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard. I did not hide my face from mockery and spitting.Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.He who gives me justice is near. Who will dare to bring charges against me now? Where are my accusers? Let them appear!See, the Sovereign Lord is on my side! Who will declare me guilty? All my enemies will be destroyed like old clothes that have been eaten by moths!

Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward Jerusalem.

As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria.

The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.

When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal.And Elijah said to Elisha,“ Stay here, for the Lord has told me to go to Bethel.” But Elisha replied,“ As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!” So they went down together to Bethel.The group of prophets from Bethel came to Elisha and asked him,“ Did you know that the Lord is going to take your master away from you today?”“ Of course I know,” Elisha answered.“ But be quiet about it.”

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.

“ And now I am bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what awaits me,except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead.But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus— the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.

until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit.

Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith: Christ was revealed in a human body and vindicated by the Spirit. He was seen by angels and announced to the nations. He was believed in throughout the world and taken to heaven in glory.

He came over, took Paul’s belt, and bound his own feet and hands with it. Then he said,“ The Holy Spirit declares,‘ So shall the owner of this belt be bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.’”When we heard this, we and the local believers all begged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.But he said,“ Why all this weeping? You are breaking my heart! I am ready not only to be jailed at Jerusalem but even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus.”When it was clear that we couldn’t persuade him, we gave up and said,“ The Lord’s will be done.”

Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end.

While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.

Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority.So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.

As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven.

Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father.”

Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.

That is why the Scriptures say,“ When he ascended to the heights, he led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to his people.”Notice that it says“ he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world.And the same one who descended is the one who ascended higher than all the heavens, so that he might fill the entire universe with himself.Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.

“ But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.

Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?

I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
