They replied,“ Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”

So they answered and said,“ John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”

Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen.

And so they asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” And he* said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” And he answered,“ No.”

and said to his servants,“ This is John the Baptist; he himself has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

But others were saying,“ He is Elijah.” And others were saying,“ He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”

They asked him, and said to him,“ Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying,“ This truly is the Prophet.”

“ Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.

So they* said again to the man who was blind,“ What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said,“ He is a prophet.”
