Late in the afternoon the twelve disciples came to him and said,“ Send the crowds away to the nearby villages and farms, so they can find food and lodging for the night. There is nothing to eat here in this remote place.”

Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said,“ Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

Late in the afternoon the 12 disciples came to him. They said,“ Send the crowd away. They can go to the nearby villages and countryside. There they can find food and a place to stay. There is nothing here.”

Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him,“ Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”

Now the day was ending, and the twelve came up and said to Him,“ Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; because here, we are in a secluded place.”

When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him,“ Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.”

And the day began to wear away; and the twelve came, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages and country round about, and lodge, and get provisions: for we are here in a desert place.

And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

Now the day began to draw to a close, so the twelve came and said to Jesus,“ Send the crowd away, so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and food, because we are in an isolated place.”

The day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him,“ Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms, and lodge, and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.”

But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away.“ Tell her to go away,” they said.“ She is bothering us with all her begging.”

They even spoke against God himself, saying,“ God can’t give us food in the wilderness.Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out, but he can’t give his people bread and meat.”

Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said,“ This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late.Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.”But Jesus said,“ You feed them.”“ With what?” they asked.“ We’d have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!”“ How much bread do you have?” he asked.“ Go and find out.” They came back and reported,“ We have five loaves of bread and two fish.”Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on the green grass.So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred.Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share.They all ate as much as they wanted,and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish.A total of 5,000 men and their families were fed.

That evening the disciples came to him and said,“ This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”But Jesus said,“ That isn’t necessary— you feed them.”“ But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.“ Bring them here,” he said.Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!

Then Jesus called his disciples and told them,“ I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.”

Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked,“ Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?”He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.Philip replied,“ Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!”Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.“ There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”“ Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes.( The men alone numbered about 5,000.)Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples,“ Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed,“ Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.

After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias.

I took care of you in the wilderness, in that dry and thirsty land.

“ I will make a covenant of peace with my people and drive away the dangerous animals from the land. Then they will be able to camp safely in the wildest places and sleep in the woods without fear.
