耶穌上了山，把合自己心意的人召集到跟前，從中選出十二個人，設立他們為使徒，讓他們跟隨自己，並且差遣他們出去傳道，賜他們趕鬼的權柄。這十二位使徒是：西門——耶穌給他取名叫彼得、西庇太的兒子雅各和雅各的兄弟約翰——耶穌給他們取名叫「半尼其」，就是「雷霆之子」的意思、安得烈、腓力、巴多羅買、馬太、多馬、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、達太、激進黨人西門、後來出賣耶穌的加略人猶大。

必有神蹟隨著信我的人，他們能奉我的名趕鬼，說新的方言，又能用手拿蛇，萬一喝了什麼毒物，也不會受害。他們把手按在病人身上，病人就可痊癒。」
