耶穌就跟他們去了。快抵達時，那百夫長又請幾位朋友去見耶穌，對祂說：「主啊，不用勞駕，我不配讓你親自來我家。

一個名叫雅魯的會堂主管走過來俯伏在耶穌腳前，求耶穌到他家去，因為他有一個大約十二歲的獨生女快要死了。耶穌前去雅魯家的時候，人群擁擠著祂。有一個患了十二年血漏病的婦人耗盡了積蓄，到處求醫，但沒有人能醫治她。

但亞哈斯說：「我不求，我不要試探耶和華。」

耶穌還在說話的時候，有人從雅魯家中趕來，對雅魯說：「你的女兒已經死了，何必麻煩老師呢？」耶穌聽了，便對雅魯說：「不要怕，只要信。」於是，祂帶著彼得、雅各和雅各的弟弟約翰去雅魯家，不准其他人跟著。他們到了那裡，只見在場的人嚎啕大哭，場面混亂。耶穌進去問道：「你們為什麼大哭大嚷呢？這孩子並沒有死，只是睡著了。」這些人聽了，都譏笑祂。耶穌讓他們全部出去，然後帶著孩子的父母和三個門徒進了房間。祂拉著孩子的手說：「大利大，古米！」意思是：「小女孩，我吩咐你起來！」小女孩應聲而起，並且可以走動，那時她十二歲。在場的人都驚奇不已。耶穌鄭重叮囑他們不要把這事張揚出去，又吩咐他們給女孩東西吃。

耶穌來到管理會堂之人的家，看見殯葬的吹樂手和亂嚷嚷的人群，就吩咐他們：「你們出去吧，這女孩並沒有死，只是睡著了。」他們都譏笑祂。耶穌讓眾人都出去，然後進去拉著女孩的手，女孩就起來了。這件事傳遍了整個地區。

那個人在屋裡應聲說，『請別打攪我，門已經鎖上了，我和孩子們也已經上床了，我不能起來給你拿餅。』
