For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

so that when even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his body were brought to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.But some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were possessed by evil spirits, saying,“ I sternly warn you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”( Now seven sons of a man named Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were doing this.)But the evil spirit replied to them,“ I know about Jesus and I am acquainted with Paul, but who are you?”Then the man who was possessed by the evil spirit jumped on them and beat them all into submission. He prevailed against them so that they fled from that house naked and wounded.

A spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions and causes him to foam at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him alone, torturing him severely.

So they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw him, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell on the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.Jesus asked his father,“ How long has this been happening to him?” And he said,“ From childhood.It has often thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”Then Jesus said to him,“‘ If you are able?’ All things are possible for the one who believes.”Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said,“ I believe; help my unbelief!”Now when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it,“ Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”It shrieked, threw him into terrible convulsions, and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said,“ He is dead!”

As the boy was approaching, the demon threw him to the ground and shook him with convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

( For Jesus had said to him,“ Come out of that man, you unclean spirit!”)

correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truthand they will come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap where they are held captive to do his will.

He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.For his hands and feet had often been bound with chains and shackles, but he had torn the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him.Each night and every day among the tombs and in the mountains, he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
