For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

This was because Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times the spirit had taken hold of him. The man’s hands and feet were chained, and he was kept under guard. But he had broken his chains. And then the demon had forced him to go out into lonely places in the countryside.

甚至有人把保罗贴身的手巾围巾拿去，放在病人身上，病就好了，邪灵也出来了。那时，有几个赶鬼的犹太人，周游各处，擅自用主耶稣的名，向身上有邪灵的人说：“我奉保罗所传的耶稣的名，命令你们出来。”有一个犹太人士基瓦，是祭司长，他的七个儿子都作这事。邪灵回答他们：“耶稣我认识，保罗我也知道；你们是谁？”邪灵所附的那人就扑到他们身上，制伏了两人，胜过了他们，使他们赤着身带着伤，从那房子逃了出来。

你看，污灵一抓住他，他就忽然喊叫，并且抽疯，口吐白沫；污灵又折磨糟践他，不肯放过他。

他们就把孩子带到他跟前。那鬼一见耶稣，就立刻使孩子抽了一阵疯，倒在地上，流着唾沫打滚。耶稣问他父亲：“这事临到他有多久了？”他说：“从小就是这样。鬼常常把他扔在火里水中，要毁灭他。如果你能作什么，求你可怜我们，帮助我们。”耶稣对他说：“‘如果你能’（“如果你能”有些抄本作“你若能信”）—对于信的人，什么都能！”孩子的父亲立刻喊着说：“我信！但我的信心不够，求你帮助我。”耶稣看见群众围拢了来，就斥责那污鬼说：“聋哑的鬼，我吩咐你从他身上出来，不要再进去。”那鬼大声喊叫，使孩子重重地抽了一阵疯，就出来了。孩子好像死了一样，所以许多人都说：“他死了！”

那孩子正走过来的时候，污鬼把他摔倒，使他重重地抽疯。耶稣斥责那污灵，把孩子医好，交给他父亲。

因为当时耶稣吩咐他：“你这污灵，从这人身上出来！”

以温柔劝导那些对抗的人，或许神给他们悔改的心，可以认识真理。他们虽然曾经被魔鬼掳去，随从他的意思而行，或许也能醒悟过来，脱离魔鬼的陷阱。

那人经常住在坟墓中间，从来没有人能绑住他，甚至用锁链都不能。曾经有很多次，人用脚镣和锁链捆绑他，锁链却被他挣断，脚镣也被他弄碎，始终没有人能制伏他。他昼夜在坟墓里和山野间喊叫，又用石头砍自己。
