耶穌還在說話的時候，有人從會堂主管家裡來，說：“你的女兒死了，不必再勞動老師了。”

人的驕傲必使他卑微；心裡謙卑的，必得尊榮。

你們務要在主面前謙卑，他就使你們高升。

不配再稱為你的兒子，把我當作一個雇工吧！’於是他起來往父親那裡去。他還在遠處時，他父親看見了他，就動了慈心，跑過去抱著他，連連與他親吻。兒子說：‘爸爸，我得罪了天，也得罪了你，不配再稱為你的兒子。’

並且知道神怎樣用聖靈和能力膏立拿撒勒人耶穌。他到各處行善事，醫好所有被魔鬼壓制的人，因為神與他同在。

西門．彼得看見這種情景，就俯伏在耶穌膝前，說：“主啊，離開我，因為我是個罪人。”

耶穌就和他一起去了。一大群人跟著他，擁擠著他。

我實在告訴你，除非你還清最後一分錢，否則決不能從那裡出來。“你們聽過有這樣的吩咐：‘不可姦淫。’

我用水給你們施洗，表示你們悔改；但在我以後要來的那一位，能力比我更大，我就是替他提鞋也沒有資格。他要用聖靈與火給你們施洗。

正如人子來，不是要受人的服事，而是要服事人，並且要捨命，作許多人的贖價。”

但神所賜的恩更大；所以聖經上說：“神對抗驕傲的人，賜恩給謙卑的人。”

長老們就來見耶穌，懇切地求他說：“你給他行這事，是他配得的，

你向你僕人所施的一切慈愛和信實，我實在不配得。從前我只拿著我的手杖過這約旦河；現在我卻擁有這兩隊人馬了。
