“ Which of the two obeyed his father?” They replied,“ The first.” Then Jesus explained his meaning:“ I tell you the truth, corrupt tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the Kingdom of God before you do.

“ But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying,‘ O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’

Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.”

For the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders.

And also,“ If the righteous are barely saved, what will happen to godless sinners?”

But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples,“ Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.

Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus— the man he had raised from the dead.A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him.Then Mary took a twelve ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said,“ That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.”Not that he cared for the poor— he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.Jesus replied,“ Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him,“ God should get the glory for this, because we know this man Jesus is a sinner.”

The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say,‘ He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’

But the people were displeased.“ He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it:“ Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”— and I am the worst of them all.

This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick.
