“我该用什么来比这世代呢？这正像孩童坐在街市上向同伴呼喊：‘我们为你们吹笛，你们不跳舞；我们唱哀歌，你们不捶胸。’约翰来了，既不吃也不喝，人们就说他是被鬼附的；人子来了，也吃也喝，他们又说这人贪食好酒，是税吏和罪人的朋友。而智慧是由它的果子来证实的。”

耶和华啊，你的眼目不是在寻找诚实吗？你击打他们，他们却不伤恸；你摧毁他们，他们仍不领受管教。他们使脸刚硬过于磐石，不肯回头。我说：“这些人实在是贫寒的，他们是愚昧的，因为不知道耶和华的作为，也不知道他们神的法则。我要去见尊贵的人，向他们说话，他们应该知道耶和华的作为，知道他们神的法则。”然而，这些人却齐心将轭折断，挣开绳索。

愚昧人既无知，为何手拿银钱去买智慧呢？

所有的默示，在你们看来都如封住的书卷，人将这书卷交给识字的人，说：“请念吧！”他说：“我不能念，因为它封住了。”又将这书卷交给不识字的人，说：“请念吧！”他说：“我不识字。”

“他要将知识指教谁呢？要向谁阐明信息呢？是向那些刚断奶的，离开母亲胸怀的吗？因为他咕哝咕哝，咕哝咕哝，唠唠叨叨，唠唠叨叨，这里一点，那里一点。”耶和华要藉嘲弄的嘴唇和外邦人的舌头，向这百姓说话。他曾对他们说：“这是安歇之所，你们要使疲乏的人得安歇，这是歇息之处。”他们却不肯听。耶和华的话对他们而言是“咕哝咕哝，咕哝咕哝，唠唠叨叨，唠唠叨叨，这里一点，那里一点”；以致他们往前行，却后仰跌倒，甚至跌伤，落入陷阱，被抓住了。
