似童子坐於市、相呼曰、我吹籥、爾不踊、我舉哀、爾不哭、

比之童子、坐於市井、相呼曰、我吹籲、爾不踊、我悲歌、爾不哭、

譬童子坐於街市、相呼曰、我向爾吹笛、而爾不躍、我向爾舉哀、而爾不哭、

譬諸童子坐於市井而相呼曰：「我吹笛、爾未舞！我悲歌、爾不哭！」

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:“‘ We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’

They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends,‘ We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’

“我要把這世代比作甚麼呢？它好像一些小孩子坐在市中心，呼叫別的小孩子，說：‘我們給你們吹笛子，你們卻不跳舞；我們唱哀歌，你們也不捶胸。’約翰來了，不吃也不喝，人說他是鬼附的；人子來了，又吃又喝，人卻說：‘你看，這人貪食好酒，與稅吏和罪人為友。’但智慧藉著它所作的，就證實是公義的了。”

耶和華啊！你的眼目不是要看誠實的事嗎？你擊打他們，他們卻不覺得傷痛；你摧毀他們，他們仍不肯接受管教。他們板著臉，臉皮比磐石還硬，總不肯回轉。我說：“這些人只是貧窮小民，為人愚昧；他們不曉得耶和華的道路，也不明白他們神的法則。我要親自去見那些權貴領袖，跟他們談談；因為他們曉得耶和華的道路，也明白他們神的法則。”誰知他們竟一起把軛折斷，掙脫繩索。

城裡的街上必滿了男孩女孩，在街上嬉戲。’

愚昧人既是無知，為甚麼手裡拿著價銀要買智慧呢？

對你們來說，整個異象就像密封的書卷的話，人把這書卷交給識字的，說：“請念吧！”他必回答：“我不能念，因為它是密封的。”人又把這書卷交給不識字的人，說：“請念吧！”他必回答：“我不識字。”

他們說：“他要把知識教導誰呢？要使誰明白他所傳的信息呢？是那些剛斷奶，剛離開母懷的嗎？因為他所說的，只是些重複又重複的話，和毫無意義的字母，這裡一點，那裡一點罷了。”耶和華要藉著外族人的嘴唇和外族人的舌頭，對這人民說話。他曾對他們說：“這就是安息之處，你們若使疲乏的人得安息，就必得著這安歇的地方。”但他們不肯聽從。所以耶和華對他們所說的話，就成了重複又重複的話，和毫無意義的字母，這裡一點，那裡一點，以致他們雖然往前走，卻必仰面跌倒，並且跌傷，陷入網羅被纏住。
