他们就好比：孩子们坐在街市上，彼此呼叫，说：‘我们为你们吹笛，你们却不跳舞；我们唱哀歌，你们也不哭泣。’

比之童子、坐於市井、相呼曰、我吹籲、爾不踊、我悲歌、爾不哭、

譬童子坐於街市、相呼曰、我向爾吹笛、而爾不躍、我向爾舉哀、而爾不哭、

譬諸童子坐於市井而相呼曰：「我吹笛、爾未舞！我悲歌、爾不哭！」

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:“‘ We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’

They are like children sitting in the market and calling out to each other. They say,“‘ We played the flute for you. But you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song. But you didn’t cry.’

And wisdom is justified by her works.

O Jehovah, do not thine eyes look upon truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.Then I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish; for they know not the way of Jehovah, nor the law of their God:I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they know the way of Jehovah, and the law of their God. But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.

And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof.

Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?

And all vision is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I cannot, for it is sealed:and the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I am not learned.

Whom will he teach knowledge? and whom will he make to understand the message? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts?For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little.Nay, but by men of strange lips and with another tongue will he speak to this people;to whom he said, This is the rest, give ye rest to him that is weary; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.Therefore shall the word of Jehovah be unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
