( Now all the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.

众百姓和税吏既受过约翰的洗，听见这话，就以神为义；

眾與稅吏、咸受洗於如望、聞其言莫不稱頌天主至德；

( All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.

All the people who heard Jesus’ words agreed that God’s way was right. Even the tax collectors agreed. These people had all been baptized by John.

( When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John,

Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him,“ Teacher, what should we do?”

But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

They sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb:“ Great and astounding are your deeds, Lord God, the All- Powerful! Just and true are your ways, King over the nations!

Absolutely not! Let God be proven true, and every human being shown up as a liar, just as it is written:“ so that you will be justified in your words and will prevail when you are judged.”But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is he?( I am speaking in human terms.)Absolutely not! For otherwise how could God judge the world?

He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm he spoke and taught accurately the facts about Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John.

Against you– you above all– I have sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. So you are just when you confront me; you are right when you condemn me.

So Paul said,“ Into what then were you baptized?”“ Into John’s baptism,” they replied.

Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ I tell you the truth, tax collectors and prostitutes will go ahead of you into the kingdom of God!For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe. Although you saw this, you did not later change your minds and believe him.

Now I heard the angel of the waters saying:“ You are just– the one who is and who was, the Holy One– because you have passed these judgments,

For ignoring the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking instead to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

Then people from Jerusalem, as well as all Judea and all the region around the Jordan, were going out to him,and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.

Adoni-Bezek said,“ Seventy kings, with thumbs and big toes cut off, used to lick up food scraps under my table. God has repaid me for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
