但他要憑信心毫不疑惑地祈求，因為疑惑的人三心二意，行事為人沒有定見，就像海上隨風翻騰的波濤，這種人從主那裡什麼也得不到。

那時，施洗者約翰來到猶太的曠野傳道，說：「悔改吧，因為天國臨近了！」約翰就是以賽亞先知所說的那位，他說：「有人在曠野大聲呼喊，『預備主的道，修直祂的路。』」約翰身穿駱駝毛的衣服，腰束皮帶，吃的是蝗蟲、野蜜。那時，耶路撒冷、猶太各地和約旦河一帶的人都來到約翰那裡，

他們如同枯乾的水井和被狂風吹散的霧氣，有幽幽黑暗留給他們。

他說：「我就是在曠野大聲呼喊『修直主的路』的那個人，正如以賽亞先知所言。」

果然，約翰出現了，他在曠野勸人悔改，接受洗禮，使罪得到赦免。猶太全境和耶路撒冷的居民都到約翰那裡承認他們的罪，在約旦河裡接受他的洗禮。

可是，你必不再居首位，因為你放縱情慾，如沸騰不止的水，你上了你父親的床，玷污了我的榻。

他們離開後，耶穌對眾人談起約翰，說：「你們從前去曠野要看什麼呢？看隨風搖動的蘆葦嗎？如果不是，你們到底想看什麼？是看穿綾羅綢緞的人嗎？那些穿綾羅綢緞的人生活在王宮裡。
