安息日，耶穌到一個法利賽人的首領家裏去吃飯，他們就窺探他。在他面前有一個患水臌的人。耶穌對律法師和法利賽人說：「安息日治病可以不可以？」他們卻不言語。耶穌就治好那人，叫他走了；便對他們說：「你們中間誰有驢或有牛，在安息日掉在井裏，不立時拉牠上來呢？」他們不能對答這話。

於是窺探耶穌，打發奸細裝作好人，要在他的話上得把柄，好將他交在巡撫的政權之下。

他們就問他說：「他向你做甚麼？是怎麼開了你的眼睛呢？」他回答說：「我方才告訴你們，你們不聽，為甚麼又要聽呢？莫非你們也要作他的門徒嗎？」他們就罵他說：「你是他的門徒；我們是摩西的門徒。神對摩西說話是我們知道的；只是這個人，我們不知道他從哪裏來！」

那尋索我命的設下網羅；那想要害我的口出惡言，終日思想詭計。

法利賽人中有的說：「這個人不是從神來的，因為他不守安息日。」又有人說：「一個罪人怎能行這樣的神蹟呢？」他們就起了紛爭。

那天是安息日，所以猶太人對那醫好的人說：「今天是安息日，你拿褥子是不可的。」他卻回答說：「那使我痊癒的，對我說：『拿你的褥子走吧。』」他們問他說：「對你說『拿褥子走』的是甚麼人？」那醫好的人不知道是誰；因為那裏的人多，耶穌已經躲開了。後來耶穌在殿裏遇見他，對他說：「你已經痊癒了，不要再犯罪，恐怕你遭遇的更加利害。」那人就去告訴猶太人，使他痊癒的是耶穌。所以猶太人逼迫耶穌，因為他在安息日做了這事。
