“ But woe to you who are rich! For you have received your consolation.

「富有的人有禍了，因為你們已經享盡了人世間的安逸！

惟爾富者禍矣、以爾已得爾之慰也、

哀哉爾富人、享盡爾溫燠。

“ But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.

“ But how terrible it will be for you who are rich! You have already had your easy life.

“ But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

“ What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now.

But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort.

But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full.

“ But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation.

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort.

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

“ But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort already.

Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.

Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;for when he dies he will carry nothing away. His glory won’t descend after him.Though while he lived he blessed his soul— and men praise you when you do well for yourself—he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you.Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth- eaten.Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days.Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.You have lived in luxury on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.You have condemned and you have murdered the righteous one. He doesn’t resist you.

Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be arrogant, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;

Those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches—none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.

But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was very rich.Jesus, seeing that he became very sad, said,“ How hard it is for those who have riches to enter into God’s Kingdom!For it is easier for a camel to enter in through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter into God’s Kingdom.”

But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

He said to them,“ Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”He spoke a parable to them, saying,“ The ground of a certain rich man produced abundantly.He reasoned within himself, saying,‘ What will I do, because I don’t have room to store my crops?’He said,‘ This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.I will tell my soul,“ Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”’“ But God said to him,‘ You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared— whose will they be?’So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

Listen to this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who tell their husbands,“ Bring us drinks!”The Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness that behold,“ The days shall come on you that they will take you away with hooks, and the last of you with fish hooks.You will go out at the breaks in the wall, everyone straight before her; and you will cast yourselves into Harmon,” says Yahweh.

For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.For there are no struggles in their death, but their strength is firm.They are free from burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men.Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment.Their eyes bulge with fat. Their minds pass the limits of conceit.They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression.They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth.Therefore their people return to them, and they drink up waters of abundance.They say,“ How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?”Behold, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches.

“ Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come!Go to Calneh, and see; and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. are they better than these kingdoms? or is their border greater than your border?Those who put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;Who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the middle of the stall;who strum on the strings of a harp; who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best oils; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

“ Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, and grow mighty in power?Their child is established with them in their sight, their offspring before their eyes.Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.Their bulls breed without fail. Their cows calve, and don’t miscarry.They send out their little ones like a flock. Their children dance.They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol.They tell God,‘ Depart from us, for we don’t want to know about your ways.What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?’

“ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day.A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was taken to his gate, full of sores,and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores.The beggar died, and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried.In Hades, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom.He cried and said,‘ Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.’“ But Abraham said,‘ Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in the same way, bad things. But here he is now comforted, and you are in anguish.

“ When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.

For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.

Then I said,“ Surely these are poor. They are foolish; for they don’t know the Yahweh’s way, nor the law of their God.I will go to the great men and will speak to them, for they know the way of Yahweh, and the law of their God.” But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.Therefore a lion out of the forest will kill them. A wolf of the evenings will destroy them. A leopard will watch against their cities. Everyone who goes out there will be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many and their backsliding has increased.

Return to her just as she returned, and repay her double as she did, and according to her works. In the cup which she mixed, mix to her double.However much she glorified herself, and grew wanton, so much give her of torment and mourning. For she says in her heart,‘ I sit a queen, and am no widow, and will in no way see mourning.’Therefore in one day her plagues will come: death, mourning, and famine; and she will be utterly burned with fire; for the Lord God who has judged her is strong.

‘ The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says Yahweh of Armies;‘ and in this place I will give peace,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”
