Some of the Pharisees asked,“ Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

Some of the Pharisees said,“ It is against the Law to do this on the Sabbath day. Why are you doing it?”

But some Pharisees said,“ Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”

Immediately the man was healed, and he picked up his mat and started walking.( Now that day was a Sabbath.)So the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed,“ It is the Sabbath, and you are not permitted to carry your mat.”But he answered them,“ The man who made me well said to me,‘ Pick up your mat and walk.’”

You must observe the Sabbath rather than doing anything you please on my holy day. You must look forward to the Sabbath and treat the LORD’s holy day with respect. You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities, and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals.

So the Pharisees said to him,“ Look, why are they doing what is against the law on the Sabbath?”

The experts in the law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find a reason to accuse him.But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand,“ Get up and stand here.” So he rose and stood there.Then Jesus said to them,“ I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?”

If a man gives his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep, and it dies or is hurt or is carried away without anyone seeing it,

Then they said to him,“ John’s disciples frequently fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours continue to eat and drink.”

“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You give a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you neglect what is more important in the law– justice, mercy, and faithfulness! You should have done these things without neglecting the others.Blind guides! You strain out a gnat yet swallow a camel!

“ Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.”

Six days work may be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD; anyone who does work on the Sabbath day must surely be put to death.

When the Israelites were in the wilderness they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and to the whole community.They put him in custody, because there was no clear instruction about what should be done to him.Then the LORD said to Moses,“ The man must surely be put to death; the whole community must stone him with stones outside the camp.”

( Now the day on which Jesus made the mud and caused him to see was a Sabbath.)So the Pharisees asked him again how he had gained his sight. He replied,“ He put mud on my eyes and I washed, and now I am able to see.”Then some of the Pharisees began to say,“ This man is not from God, because he does not observe the Sabbath.” But others said,“ How can a man who is a sinner perform such miraculous signs?” Thus there was a division among them.
