We do not understand what he is talking about.”Jesus could see that they wanted to ask him about these things, so he said to them,“ Are you asking each other about this– that I said,‘ In a little while you will not see me; again after a little while, you will see me’?I tell you the solemn truth, you will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy.When a woman gives birth, she has distress because her time has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being has been born into the world.So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

Then he said to them,“ What are these matters you are discussing so intently as you walk along?” And they stood still, looking sad.Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him,“ Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that have happened there in these days?”He said to them,“ What things?”“ The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene,” they replied,“ a man who, with his powerful deeds and words, proved to be a prophet before God and all the people;and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be condemned to death, and crucified him.But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Not only this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.

in hard work and toil, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, many times without food, in cold and without enough clothing.

But I have told you these things so that when their time comes, you will remember that I told you about them.“ I did not tell you these things from the beginning because I was with you.But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking me,‘ Where are you going?’Instead your hearts are filled with sadness because I have said these things to you.But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. This one heaven must receive until the time all things are restored, which God declared from times long ago through his holy prophets.

Do not deprive each other, except by mutual agreement for a specified time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then resume your relationship, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self- control.

At that time the sovereign master, the LORD who commands armies, called for weeping and mourning, for shaved heads and sackcloth.

After he had said this, while they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud hid him from their sight.

“ Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is my associate,” says the LORD who rules over all. Strike the shepherd that the flock may be scattered; I will turn my hand against the insignificant ones.

When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,so that it will not be obvious to others when you are fasting, but only to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,“ Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”Then, after they had fasted and prayed and placed their hands on them, they sent them off.

I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them safe in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one.When I was with them I kept them safe and watched over them in your name that you have given me. Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction, so that the scripture could be fulfilled.But now I am coming to you, and I am saying these things in the world, so they may experience my joy completed in themselves.
