They said to him,“ John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”

Some of the people who were there said to Jesus,“ John’s disciples often pray and go without eating. So do the disciples of the Pharisees. But yours go on eating and drinking.”

And they said to him,“ The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.”

One day some people said to Jesus,“ John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?”

Then they said to him,“ John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.”

And they said to Him,“ The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.”

Then they said to Him,“ Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

And they said unto him, The disciples of John fast often, and make supplications; likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink.

Then they said to Him,“ John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but Yours eat and drink.”

And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise[ the disciples] of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

Then they said to him,“ John’s disciples frequently fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours continue to eat and drink.”

I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.’

John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”Jesus said to them,“ Can the groomsmen fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they can’t fast.But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made.No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins.”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”Jesus said to them,“ Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch would tear away from the garment, and a worse hole is made.Neither do people put new wine into old wine skins, or else the skins would burst, and the wine be spilled, and the skins ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wine skins, and both are preserved.”

When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him,“ Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”

Therefore a dispute arose on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.

Again, the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples,

When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and you don’t see? Why have we afflicted our soul, and you don’t notice?’“ Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and oppress all your laborers.Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness. You don’t fast today so as to make your voice to be heard on high.Is this the fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to humble his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under himself? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?“ Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say,‘ Behold, a gluttonous man, and a drunkard; a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’Wisdom is justified by all her children.”

He who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

When you eat, and when you drink, don’t you eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

The Lord said to him,“ Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judah for one named Saul, a man of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying,

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

“ When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
