法利塞人與經生見而不悅、謂耶穌門徒曰：『爾等胡為與稅吏罪人共席？』

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples,“ Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

於是起了大喧嚷，有幾個法利賽黨的經學士站起來力爭說：『我們看不出這個人有甚麼惡呀；萬一有鬼靈或天使對他說過話、可怎麼辦呢？』

請耶穌的法利賽人看見了，就心裏說：『這個人如果是那位神言人，總會知道纏着他的是誰，是甚麼樣的女人，就是個「罪人」哪。』

（原來法利賽人、其實所有的猶太人、都執守着前人的傳統規矩，若不仔細洗手，就不喫；

他們對人說：『你在你那兒呆着吧！不要挨近我，因為我的「屬聖」會染着你。』主說：這些人是我鼻中的煙，是整天燒𤏲的火。

經學士和法利賽人就議論起來，說：「這個說僭妄話的人是誰啊？除了上帝以外、誰能赦罪呢？」

眾人看見，都唧唧咕咕地彼此議論說，『「罪人」家裏、他還進去投宿呢！』

那法利賽人站着，用以下這些話禱告說：「上帝啊，我感謝你，我不像其他的人、勒索、不義、姦淫，或者竟像這個收稅人。

這些日子有一天、耶穌正教訓人；有法利賽人和教法師也在座。人從加利利各村莊、和猶太跟耶路撒冷來；主的能力與耶穌同在，使他能行醫。

『但是你們以為怎樣？有一個人有兩個孩子；他走上前對老大說：「孩子，你去；你今天在葡萄園裏工作吧。」他回答說，「阿爸，我去」；卻沒有去。又走上前去對老二也這樣說；他回答說，「我不願意」；後來後悔，去了。這兩人中，誰實行了那父親的意旨呢？他們說：『那後者。』耶穌對他們說：「我實在告訴你們，收稅的人和妓女比你們先進上帝的國呢！因為約翰引着義路到你們這裏來，你們不信他；收稅人和妓女倒信他。你們看了之後，還是沒有後悔而去信他。

眾收稅人和「罪人」都走近耶穌那裏，要聽他。法利賽人以及經學士、就唧唧咕咕地彼此議論說：『這個人接待一些「罪人」，又和他們一同喫飯哪。』

眾民和收稅人因受過約翰的洗、聽見了這話、就承認上帝為義。但法利賽人和律法師因沒受過約翰的洗、竟自廢棄了上帝的計畫了）。

人子來了，也喫也喝，你們就說，「看哪，一個貪喫好酒的人！收稅人和『罪人』的朋友！」
