But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples,“ Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

The shouting grew loud, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party got up and argued vehemently:“ We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”

When the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself,“ This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching Him— she’s a sinner!”

( For the Pharisees, in fact all the Jews, will not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, keeping the tradition of the elders.

They say,‘ Keep to yourself, don’t come near me, for I am too holy for you!’ These practices are smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all day long.

Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think:“ Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

All who saw it began to complain,“ He’s gone to lodge with a sinful man!”

The Pharisee took his stand and was praying like this:‘ God, I thank You that I’m not like other people— greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

On one of those days while He was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem. And the Lord’s power to heal was in Him.

“ But what do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ My son, go, work in the vineyard today.’“ He answered,‘ I don’t want to!’ Yet later he changed his mind and went.Then the man went to the other and said the same thing.“‘ I will, sir,’ he answered. But he didn’t go.“ Which of the two did his father’s will?”“ The first,” they said. Jesus said to them,“ I assure you: Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you!For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.

All the tax collectors and sinners were approaching to listen to Him.And the Pharisees and scribes were complaining,“ This man welcomes sinners and eats with them!”

( And when all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged God’s way of righteousness, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.But since the Pharisees and experts in the law had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of God for themselves.)

The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say,‘ Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
