於是他們大大地喧嚷起來。有些法利賽派的經文士們站起來激烈地爭辯，說：「我們查不出這個人有什麼錯。也許有靈或天使對他說過話呢！」

那邀請耶穌的法利賽人看見了，心裡說：「這個人如果是先知，就會知道摸他的是誰，是個什麼樣的女人，因為她是個罪人。」

原來，法利賽人和所有的猶太人都拘守古人的傳統：如果不按規矩洗手就不吃飯；

他們說：『你就站在那裡，不要接近我，因為我比你聖潔。』這些就是我鼻孔中的煙，是終日燃燒的火。

那些經文士和法利賽人就開始想：「這個人是誰？竟說褻瀆的話。除了神一位之外，誰能赦免罪呢？」

大家看見，就抱怨說：「他竟然到一個罪人家裡去借宿。」

那法利賽人站著，向自己禱告這些話：『神哪，我感謝你，因為我不像其他人那樣：勒索、不義、通姦，也不像這個稅吏。

就在那些日子裡，有一天耶穌在教導人的時候，也有些法利賽人和律法教師坐在那裡，他們是從加利利和猶太地區的各村莊，以及耶路撒冷來的。主的大能與耶穌同在，使他能醫病。

「這件事你們怎麼看？一個人有兩個兒子，他前來對大兒子說：『孩子，你今天到葡萄園去做工吧。』「大兒子回答說：『我不願意去。』可是後來他悔改，就去了。父親前來對小兒子也說同樣的話。「小兒子回答說：『主啊，我去。』可是他沒有去。「這兩個兒子中，哪一個遵行父親的意願呢？」他們回答說：「大兒子。」耶穌說：「我確實地告訴你們：稅吏和妓女要在你們的前面進神的國，因為約翰來到你們這裡指明義的道路，你們不相信他，而那些稅吏和妓女們卻相信了他。你們雖然看見了，後來還是沒有悔改去相信他。

當時，稅吏和罪人都接近耶穌，聽他講說。法利賽人和經文士抱怨，說：「這個人歡迎罪人，又與他們一起吃飯。」

所有已經受過約翰洗禮的民眾和稅吏，聽了這話，都承認神是義的；而沒有受過他洗禮的法利賽人和律法師們，就棄絕了神對他們的計劃。

人子來了，也吃也喝，你們就說：『看，這個貪食好酒的人！稅吏和罪人的朋友！』
