眾人大聲喧嚷，有幾個法利賽派的律法教師站起來爭辯說：「我們找不出這人有什麼錯處，也許真的有靈或天使跟他說過話。」

請耶穌的法利賽人看在眼裡，心想：「如果這人真的是先知，就該知道摸祂的是誰，是個什麼樣的女人，她是個罪人。」

因為法利賽人和所有的猶太人都拘守古人的傳統，總是先照禮儀洗手之後才吃飯；

還對人說，『站遠點，別挨近我，因為我比你聖潔！』我被這些人氣得鼻孔冒煙，整天怒火難息。

那些法利賽人和律法教師開始議論起來：「這個說話褻瀆上帝的人是誰啊？除了上帝以外，誰能夠赦罪？」

百姓見狀，都埋怨說：「祂怎麼到一個罪人家裡作客？」

法利賽人站在那裡自言自語地禱告說，『上帝啊！我感謝你，因為我不像別人那樣勒索、不義、通姦，也不像這稅吏。

有一天，耶穌在教導人，旁邊坐著來自加利利、猶太和耶路撒冷各地的法利賽人和律法教師，主的能力伴隨著耶穌，使祂能醫治病人。

耶穌又說：「你們怎樣看這件事？某人有兩個兒子。他對大兒子說，『孩子，你今天到葡萄園工作吧！』「大兒子回答說，『我不去！』但後來他改變了主意，就去了。「那父親又對小兒子說，『你今天到葡萄園工作吧！』小兒子回答說，『好的，父親。』他答應了，卻沒有去。「你們認為這兩個兒子，到底哪一個服從父親呢？」他們回答道：「大兒子。」耶穌說：「我實在告訴你們，稅吏和娼妓要比你們先進上帝的國。因為約翰來指示你們當行的正路，你們不信他，但稅吏和娼妓信了。你們親眼看見了這些事，竟然還是執迷不悟，不肯信他。

許多稅吏和罪人都來聽耶穌講道，法利賽人和律法教師埋怨說：「這個人竟和罪人來往，還跟他們一起吃飯。」

眾百姓和稅吏聽了這番話，都承認上帝是公義的，因為他們接受了約翰的洗禮。但那些法利賽人和律法教師沒有接受約翰的洗禮，拒絕了上帝為他們所定的旨意。

人子來了，又吃又喝，你們就說，『看啊，祂是個貪吃好酒之徒，與稅吏和罪人爲友！』
