So Levi got up and followed him.Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.( There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.)But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples,“ Why does he eat with such scum?”When Jesus heard this, he told them,“ Healthy people don’t need a doctor— sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”Jesus replied,“ Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them.But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.“ Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.“ And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.”

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth.“ Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with such scum?”When Jesus heard this, he said,“ Healthy people don’t need a doctor— sick people do.”Then he added,“ Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture:‘ I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”Jesus replied,“ Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.“ Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? When Jesus heard his answer, he said,“ There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him,“ Come, follow me.”

Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.

But Jesus told him,“ Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus called out to them,“ Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”And they left their nets at once and followed him.A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too.

Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him,“ Follow me.”Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved— the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked,“ Lord, who will betray you?”Peter asked Jesus,“ What about him, Lord?”Jesus replied,“ If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”
