And he got up and followed him.As Jesus was having a meal in Levi’s home, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.When the experts in the law and the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples,“ Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”When Jesus heard this he said to them,“ Those who are healthy don’t need a physician, but those who are sick do. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. So they came to Jesus and said,“ Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”Jesus said to them,“ The wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they do not fast.But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and at that time they will fast.No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse.And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be destroyed. Instead new wine is poured into new wineskins.”

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth.“ Follow me,” he said to him. And he got up and followed him.As Jesus was having a meal in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Jesus and his disciples.When the Pharisees saw this they said to his disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”When Jesus heard this he said,“ Those who are healthy don’t need a physician, but those who are sick do.Go and learn what this saying means:‘ I want mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”Then John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”Jesus said to them,“ The wedding guests cannot mourn while the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast.No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, because the patch will pull away from the garment and the tear will be worse.And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the skins burst and the wine is spilled out and the skins are destroyed. Instead they put new wine into new wineskins and both are preserved.”

When Jesus heard this, he said to him,“ One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him,“ Follow me.”

If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

But Jesus said to him,“ Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

He said to them,“ Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people.”They left their nets immediately and followed him.Going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. Then he called them.

( Now Jesus said this to indicate clearly by what kind of death Peter was going to glorify God.) After he said this, Jesus told Peter,“ Follow me.”Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them.( This was the disciple who had leaned back against Jesus’ chest at the meal and asked,“ Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?”)So when Peter saw him, he asked Jesus,“ Lord, what about him?”Jesus replied,“ If I want him to live until I come back, what concern is that of yours? You follow me!”
