And He went out again by the seashore; and all the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax office, and He* said to him,“ Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.And it* happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples,“ Why is He eating with tax collectors and sinners?”And hearing this, Jesus* said to them,“ It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they* came and* said to Him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”And Jesus said to them,“ While the groom is with them, the attendants of the groom cannot fast, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast.But the days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast, on that day.“ No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s office; and He* said to him,“ Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.Then it happened that as Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and began dining with Jesus and His disciples.And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples,“ Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?”But when Jesus heard this, He said,“ It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.Now go and learn what this means:‘ I desire compassion, rather than sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”And Jesus said to them,“ The attendants of the groom cannot mourn as long as the groom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results.Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Now when Jesus heard this, He said to him,“ One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

Then Jesus said to His disciples,“ If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.

The next day He decided to go to Galilee, and He* found Philip. And Jesus* said to him,“ Follow Me.”

If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.

But Jesus* said to him,“ Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

And He* said to them,“ Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people.”Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them.

Now He said this, indicating by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had said this, He* said to him,“ Follow Me!”Peter turned around and* saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them— the one who also had leaned back on His chest at the supper and said,“ Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?”So Peter, upon seeing him,* said to Jesus,“ Lord, and what about this man?”Jesus* said to him,“ If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”
