He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them.And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him,“ Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples,“ Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”And when Jesus heard it, he said to them,“ Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him,“ Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”And Jesus said to them,“ Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made.And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins— and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him,“ Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”But when he heard it, he said,“ Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.Go and learn what this means:‘ I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”And Jesus said to them,“ Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;

When Jesus heard this, he said to him,“ One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Then Jesus told his disciples,“ If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him,“ Follow me.”

If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

And Jesus said to him,“ Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

And he said to them,“ Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”Immediately they left their nets and followed him.And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.

( This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him,“ Follow me.”Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said,“ Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?”When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus,“ Lord, what about this man?”Jesus said to him,“ If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”
