So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council.The lying witnesses said,“ This man is always speaking against the holy Temple and against the law of Moses.

The men at the table said among themselves,“ Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”

They replied,“ We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.”

Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said,“ Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy.

Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself,“ I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude

But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,“ What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.”

One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby.( It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord’s healing power was strongly with Jesus.

But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves,“ That’s blasphemy! Does he think he’s God?”

“ Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord.“ Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.

He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.

But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you.

“ O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.”

The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out,“ Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”

And then seat two scoundrels across from him who will accuse him of cursing God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”So the elders and other town leaders followed the instructions Jezebel had written in the letters.They called for a fast and put Naboth at a prominent place before the people.Then the two scoundrels came and sat down across from him. And they accused Naboth before all the people, saying,“ He cursed God and the king.” So he was dragged outside the town and stoned to death.The town leaders then sent word to Jezebel,“ Naboth has been stoned to death.”

Blow them away like chaff in the wind— a wind sent by the angel of the Lord.

Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be put to death.

Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one— for God himself has given us right standing with himself.

Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!

But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.
