The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves,“ Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

But the Pharisees and teachers of religious law said to themselves,“ Who does he think he is? That’s blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

The scribes and the Pharisees began thinking of the implications, saying,“ Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, except God alone?”

And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying,“ Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

“ I am the one, I sweep away your transgressions for my own sake and remember your sins no more.

Then they secretly persuaded some men to say,“ We heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; so they came, seized him, and took him to the Sanhedrin.They also presented false witnesses who said,“ This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the law.

Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves,“ Who is this man who even forgives sins?”

“ We aren’t stoning you for a good work,” the Jews answered,“ but for blasphemy, because you— being a man— make yourself God.”

Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you’ve heard the blasphemy.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not conceal my iniquity. I said,“ I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

But some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts:“ Why does he speak like this? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like a mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.

On one of those days while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem. And the Lord’s power to heal was in him.

At this, some of the scribes said to themselves,“ He’s blaspheming!”

“ Come, let’s settle this,” says the LORD.“ Though your sins are scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are crimson red, they will be like wool.

He forgives all your iniquity; he heals all your diseases.

But with you there is forgiveness, so that you may be revered.

Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for your own sake, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your name.

The LORD passed in front of him and proclaimed: The LORD— the LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth,maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.

Then seat two wicked men opposite him and have them testify against him, saying,“ You have cursed God and the king!” Then take him out and stone him to death.The men of his city, the elders and nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them, just as it was written in the letters she had sent them.They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth at the head of the people.The two wicked men came in and sat opposite him. Then the wicked men testified against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying,“ Naboth has cursed God and the king!” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones.Then they sent word to Jezebel:“ Naboth has been stoned to death.”

Let them be like chaff in the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away.

Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death; the whole community is to stone him. If he blasphemes the Name, he is to be put to death, whether the resident alien or the native.

Who can bring an accusation against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies.

He will again have compassion on us; he will vanquish our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him
