格迦薩周圍地區所有的眾民、因被大懼怕所困迫、就求耶穌離開他們。耶穌便上船回去了。鬼所由出的那人祈求耶穌、要跟他在一起；耶穌卻打發他走，說：

於是撒馬利亞人來見耶穌，求他同他們一起住；耶穌便在那裏住了兩天。

這樣，那羣人見耶穌不在那裏，門徒也不在了，他們就自己上了那些小船，往迦伯農去找耶穌。

耶穌聽見了，就從那裏暗暗坐船退到荒野地方去；羣眾聽見了，卻從各城步行跟着他。耶穌出來，看見一大羣人，就憐憫他們，治好了他們的病人。

他們卻強留他說：『請同我們住下吧，因為將近晚上了，日頭已經平西了。』耶穌就進去，要同他們住下。

眾人看見他們走了，有許多人認得他們，便從各城步行，一齊向那裏跑，比他們先到。耶穌出了船，看見一大羣人，就憐憫他們，因為他們像羊沒有牧人一般；就教訓他們許多事。
